I wrote about many of these themes in my book, “Leave Your Phone At The Door”, which is due out tomorrow. Unlike Cal Newport and Jonathan Haidt, I bring no smarts to the table but I am a great advocate of the virtues of randomness and serendipity. The technology is not actually the root problem in my view. Sadly, we are confronting a societal breakdown which has caused a diminution of community and the technological platforms have merely accelerated that process.

Thank you for sharing a peak into how you incorporate DM into your day. I too am a big fan of Newport’s work (published about him and how I look at tech in our family yesterday).

I too am a big fan of your work! Look forward to more, always.

I’ve read Cal Newport’s book but this is a brilliantly well written reminder!

I love this, Katherine! As someone who is always pushing against technology, I love hearing I'm not alone! I try to embrace the parts that are adding something to my life but get away from the aspects that consume it in the wrong ways. Hope it's rubbing off on my kids but that's an UPHILL battle. Thank you for your insight and tips!

The sad thing about attempting an enriching life off of screens is how lonely it can be. From empty playgrounds to silent blocks on sunny days to not knowing what's happening without a constant updated feed.

Great read. I need more deliberate phone avoidance in my daily life and appreciate the glimpse into your phone boundaries.
