This teacher is 100% in favor of a phone ban. I think districts are most afraid of parent pushback. I wish parents would be more vocal about supporting this. Thank you for leading the charge!
Yes. I taught briefly at two different public middle schools (2015-2018) and there was no real, district or school-wide enforcement beyond teachers saying a million times a day “put your phone away”. It was truly a disaster and that was years ago!
Maybe the best way to deal with this is some kind of affirmative training for students on controlling their phone. At the same time, the policy should be that any phone (or watch) which is detected by the teacher will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the semester.

Yes. This *should* be a no-brainer, but sadly it isn’t. Phones in schools equals little to no learning actually taking place.
