I’ve also heard that since the invention of the washing machine, we actually spend more time doing laundry. This is probably relative to the recent past, say a century ago instead of when laundry water had to be heated over an open fire. Still, the reason behind that was that since it became so easy to do laundry, it became expected to put on perfectly clean clothes every morning, and therefore do laundry daily instead of weekly. I expect the same is true for driving versus walking. There is no freedom in technology without intentionality.

I think it was the blogger C Jane Kendrick who once wrote about imagining Ma Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie coming into her kitchen, looking at all the food and appliances and indoor plumbing, and exclaiming "And this is what you are making for dinner?!"
