This feels like such a practical, accessible approach to travel. May I ask how early you were able to implement this kind of flexibility in planning with family trips? Right now we're split between toddlers and teens, and while the teens are very much down for spontaneity the toddlers are pretty hardcore in their love for routine, especially on trips. I'm curious to know how it was for you, and if you waited to travel as a family till your youngest had reached a particular age.
Hi Jan. We traveled even when our kids were babies, but always tried to structure the day around their napping schedules. This usually meant making sure we were back at our Airbnb or hotel for an afternoon sleep, and then again in the evenings for an earlyish bedtime. It did affect what we did and saw, but was still worth it! I did several trips with my teenage brothers coming along to help me out with my babies, and it was a lovely mix of ages. Sometimes they could go do things alone in the afternoons when I was supervising naps, and sometimes my husband and I could get out in the evenings while they babysat; it was win-win for everyone.
