Hello from a fellow Ontarian and thanks for this piece Katherine :) I can confirm the rise of interest in the analog! My husband Peco and I have been offering practical guidance and encouragement to readers to "sow seeds of anachronism" https://schooloftheunconformed.substack.com/p/sowing-anachronism-how-to-be-weird and have just completed a communal digital fast which we'll report on tomorrow :)
It has been very interesting to see the upswing in interest in all things analog. It definitely was not that way when I did my year of one handwritten letter per day back in 2019! I am glad that so many people have started exploring the many ways to live in a way less dependent on screens. So glad to have you as part of this amazing movement.

Ruth, I just looked at your Substack and it's fascinating. I look forward to learning more about your work. Where in Ontario are you?
Yes, "smart" and "dumb" are catchy but marketing speak, "digital" and "analog" are descriptive and feel more neutral.
So glad you wrote this: I am emphatically on Team Analog House: we have no smart appliances and I prefer to keep it that way!
Thank you for sharing!
